LESS THAN 1% OF ALL VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE EVER REACH MORE THAN 100,000 VIEWS
the 0.64% of videos with 100,000 views or more on YouTube represent 81.6% of all views on the platform.
Or, to flip that on its head, 99.36% of videos uploaded to YouTube draw less than a fifth of all views.
Pex CEO Rasty Turek suggests that “should YouTube remove [these 99.36% of] underperforming videos, they would save an astounding amount of money and still retain most of the revenue”.
over 400 hours of video are uploaded onto the platform every single minute.
Although Gaming content is YouTube’s fastest growing category of video, music is the most profitable.
Videos under the Music category are also the shortest in length and generate the most views per average video.
According to Pex, the average number of views for videos in the Music category are 16,397, at an average length of 6.8 minutes, with an average 2,411 views per minute of video content.
Music content actually only accounts for 5% of all content on YouTube, but still makes up 20% of all views.
DISTROKID PARTNERS WITH AUDIBLE MAGIC TO VERIFY MUSIC AUTHENTICITY
DistroKid will also be the first distributor to implement Audible Magic’s detection tool Broad Spectrum.
An extension of Audible Magic’s ContentID service, Broad Spectrum can identify extreme manipulations of rate, pitch and tempo using only small clips of audio.
The distributor has also launched a free service called DistroLock that allows any artist to upload and register their unreleased audio files through the platform, which will encode a unique audio fingerprint and add it to Audible Magic’s registry.
A much more modern and up to date way of retaining the rights to your music than just posting a CD to yourself.
DistroKid developed this platform with Audible Magic’s insights as an industry-wide solution that will request to block the unauthorized release of an artist’s music (or “leaks”) from appearing on streaming services and social platforms.
In April CD Baby entered into a partnership with Audible Magic to identify content rights conflicts prior to delivery to a Digital Service Provider (DSP).

PLEDGEMUSIC COLLAPSE: UK MUSIC INDUSTRY UNITES TO SUPPORT AFFECTED ARTISTS & BUSINESSES
A group of UK-based music trade organizations and charities have launched a bid to support UK artists and businesses impacted by the collapse of D2C and e-commerce platform PledgeMusic.
The collective will use an ‘impact survey’ to better understand the scale of the fallout from the firm’s collapse and to help coordinate assistance to those facing difficulties.
The survey, hosted by the Musicians’ Union (MU), can be accessed here and closes at 12pm on Tuesday June 25.
As reported last month, PledgeMusic is headed into administration after it failed to find a buyer following a three month search, with estimates of what the company’sowes artists currently pinned at over $1 million.
The latest action is being jointly promoted by UK Music, Music Managers Forum, Musicians’ Union, the Association of Independent Music, Help Musicians UK, PRS Foundation and International Showcase Fund partners, including British Underground, PRS Members’ Fund, the Music Producers Guild, The Ivor’s Academy, Featured Artists Coalition, Music Support, and the BPI.
Thematic Surpasses 1 Billion ‘Demonetization-Free’ Song Plays for Repped Artists
The LA-based Thematic is built on a simple premise: ‘demonetization-free’ licensing for content creators on platforms like YouTube in exchange for artist and song promotion.
In fact, the entire company rose from the ashes of a nightmarish legal battle between YouTube celebrity makeup artist Michelle Phan and Ultra Records.
According to fellow Thematic co-founder and CEO Marc Schrobilgen, Phan had been supporting many music artists through her YouTube channel, including Kaskade, before the murky waters of music licensing quickly overwhelmed her.
The result was a mega-million dollar lawsuit filed in 2014 by Ultra, which alleged massive copyright infringement. But strangely, the suit was filed even though Ultra-signed artists like Kaskade publicly defended Phan, adding to the messiness and confusion of the situation.
“From the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to empower and give back to creators,” Michelle Phan told us. “Since uploading my first video 12 years ago, I’ve experienced lawsuits and seen first-hand what happens when big music labels come in and make copyright infringement claims.
“I understand intimately the challenges facing creators today. Through Thematic, I hope to protect creators and artists and provide a platform where they can connect, safely and free.”

HMV PARTNERS WITH TIXSERVE FOR DIGITAL IN-STORE EVENT TICKETS
HMV is looking to ramp up its live in-store event offering and has partnered with Tixserve to provide secure, content-rich digital tickets.
Tixserve is a Software as a Service (SaaS), white label, digital ticketing solution that enables event creators and rights-owners to create branded, interactive digital tickets that are delivered directly to consumers’ mobile phones.
In the run-up to HMV’s Twenty One Pilots events, it was found that touts were advertising yet to be activated Tixserve tickets online for up to £200 – a mark-up of more than 1,000% on the album/ticket bundle.
When fans alerted HMV of these cases, organisers were able to disable all ticket transfer functionality unless authorised on a case-by-case basis.
“The recent run of sell out Twenty One Pilots events required us to distribute over 3000 tickets with purchases of the band’s Trench album.
Half of all new guitar players are women, finds study
All this comes in spite of rock music slipping below the popularity of genres such as hip hop, suggesting its prevalence has more to do with how the guitar is valued by individuals for its educational and social benefits.

is it bad music or music you just don’t like?

does it accurately convey the artists intent?
a good song manifests human excellence. In other words, it is not the case that any ordinary person could create a song like it. Its creation required enormous skill. It impresses. It earns our admiration. The difficult that the creator traversed amazes us.
personality is climate what mood is to weather.
Age, sex, and socio-economic status are more relevant than personality when it comes to explaining any genre-based preferences.
in early childhood, before the higher brain networks are developed, learning is much more driven by emotions. So musical experiences acquired at that time would be more emotional than cognitive.
Another feature which shapes our musical preferences is influence of our peers. Every generation seems to have its own music that the older generation "doesn't understand". Young people introduce each other to different musical styles and bond around their own brand of music.
